Boplaas Family Vineyards in Calitzdorp has been producing and distilling wine and brandy since 1880, when the Nel family first exported Boplaas brandy to England. The estate's location in the dry Klein Karoo is particularly well suited to brandy production: Colombard thrives in the region's conditions, producing high-acid, aromatic grapes that are ideal for distillation. The warm, dry climate also encourages a significant angel's share during maturation, concentrating the spirit as it ages. The Carel Nel Reserve Brandy is made from 100% Colombard. The distilling wine is fermented before being double-distilled in an historic copper pot still, with the resulting spirit matured for five years in old Limousin oak and seasoned Portuguese Port pipes. The combination of French oak, Port wood and the arid Klein Karoo climate gives the brandy its deep golden colour, rounded texture and dried-fruit complexity.
Colour: Deep golden amber with a warm, luminous hue.
Nose: Aromas of vanilla, dried fig and sun-ripened peach lead into golden raisin, subtle spice and gentle toasted notes.
Palate: Medium-bodied and smooth, with flavours of sultana, caramelised pear, dried peach and golden raisin. Five years of maturation bring soft vanilla and gentle spice, with a subtle toasted-almond character adding depth. The texture is rounded and approachable rather than heavy.
Finish: Warm and mellow, with lingering cinnamon, vanilla, dried fruit and golden raisin.
