Blaauwklippen Merlot 2024
Established in 1682, Blaauwklippen is one of Stellenbosch's historic wine estates, set among the granite boulders and mountain slopes of the Stellenbosch winelands. The Blaauwklippen Merlot 2024 comes from two vineyard blocks on the estate, planted in medium-potential Klapmuts soils. The vines are closely planted and managed using Vertical Shoot Positioning, with drip irrigation helping to maintain consistent vine growth through Stellenbosch's warm growing season. The 2024 vintage combines 85% Merlot with 15% Petit Verdot, giving the wine a little more structure and savoury depth than a straightforward varietal Merlot. The grapes were handpicked and fermented in stainless-steel tanks, with twice-daily pump-overs and 14 days of skin contact providing gentle extraction. The wine then underwent malolactic fermentation and spent 18 months in 300-litre French oak barrels, exclusively in third-fill and older barrels. This restrained oak approach keeps the focus on fruit and texture rather than overt oak flavours.
Colour: Deep ruby red with rich purple tones and good colour intensity.
Nose: Ripe mulberry and cassis lead, followed by dark chocolate and subtle notes of spiced nuts. There is a gentle savoury quality underneath the fruit, adding complexity without overpowering the wine's generous character.
Palate: Medium to full-bodied, with generous dark berry and mulberry flavours supported by fresh acidity and distinctive chalky tannins. The Petit Verdot adds extra structure and depth, while 18 months in older French oak contributes subtle chocolate and spice rather than strong vanilla or toast. The palate is textured but smooth, with enough freshness to keep the ripe fruit focused.
Finish: Smooth and lingering, with mulberry, cassis and dark chocolate followed by a gently savoury, spicy note.
- Food Pairing : The Blaauwklippen Merlot 2024 has enough weight and tannin for savoury meat dishes while remaining approachable enough for casual meals. Try it with a charcuterie platter, pulled-pork flatbread, steak strips, lamb chops or a rich mushroom and beef pasta. The wine's ripe mulberry and cassis complement caramelised and roasted flavours, while its fresh acidity helps cut through richer meats and sauces. Blaauwklippen specifically recommends it with charcuterie platters and gourmet flatbreads topped with pulled pork or steak strips.
