Rooted on the foothills of the Simonsberg Mountain just outside Stellenbosch, Tokara Wine Estate stands among South Africa’s most respected producers of Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc. Its Reserve Collection wines are drawn from the best parcels of its reserve vineyards, vinified with meticulous care to reflect this terroir’s blend of cool evening breezes, rich decomposed granite soils and balanced sun exposure. For the Reserve Collection Cabernet Sauvignon 2022, small-yielding vines and hand harvest at optimal ripeness set the stage for fermentation with native yeasts and extended maceration. A judicious 22 months’ maturation in French oak - including a significant proportion of new barrels - builds complexity and structure while allowing varietal purity to shine. The outcome is a wine of depth, focus and unmistakable Stellenbosch character.
Colour: Deep purple-black core with a ruby-tinged edge - visually intense and youthful.
Nose: Classic Cabernet Sauvignon aromatics rise first - cassis, black cherry and ripe dark fruit - underscored by graphite, subtle liquorice and hints of briary fruit, five-spice and fynbos that speak to its Stellenbosch origins.
Palate: Full-bodied and concentrated, the palate delivers indulgent ripe fruit with dense, fine-grained tannins. Structured yet supple, flavours of cassis and dark plum are layered with savoury spice, subtle cedar and tobacco, all framed by vibrant acidity and a persistent finish.
Finish: Long and multi-layered, with lingering dark fruit, gentle oak spice and fine tannins that encourage further ageing and exploration.
