Zevenwacht Tin Mine Red 2023
The Zevenwacht Wine Estate is situated on the cool north-western slopes of Stellenbosch, overlooking Table Bay and False Bay. These elevated vineyards benefit from cooling maritime influences and well-drained soils, helping grapes retain freshness while achieving full flavour development. The Tin Mine range pays tribute to the historic tin mining activity that once took place on the estate. For the Zevenwacht Tin Mine Red 2023, the winemaking team draws inspiration from the classic Rhône blends of southern France, combining Shiraz, Mourvèdre and Grenache to create a wine that is expressive yet restrained. Each variety is fermented separately, with a portion of whole-bunch Shiraz contributing aromatic complexity, before maturation in French oak barrels for 12 months. The result is a wine that reflects both Stellenbosch fruit character and a thoughtful, terroir-driven approach to blending.
Colour: Deep ruby red with a youthful purple edge and good intensity in the glass.
Nose: Blackberry, dark cherry and ripe plum lead the aromatics, followed by notes of cracked black pepper, dried herbs, fynbos and subtle oak spice. As the wine opens, hints of savoury earthiness and charcuterie add further complexity.
Palate: Medium- to full-bodied with layers of dark berry fruit, black cherry and mulberry. Fine-grained tannins provide structure without heaviness, while fresh acidity keeps the wine focused and lively. The Mourvèdre contributes savoury depth and texture, while the Grenache brings a touch of brightness and lift.
Finish: Long and composed, finishing with lingering dark fruit, gentle spice and a subtle savoury note that invites another sip.
- Food Pairing : The Zevenwacht Tin Mine Red 2023 is particularly well suited to flame-grilled lamb chops, slow-roasted Karoo lamb shoulder, beef short ribs or a hearty mushroom and lentil casserole. The wine's ripe fruit profile complements the richness of roasted and grilled meats, while its fine tannins and fresh acidity help cut through savoury flavours and richer textures. It is also an excellent partner to mature hard cheeses and traditional South African braai dishes where smoky, charred flavours echo the wine's subtle spice and savoury character.
