Waterford Estate is situated on the eastern slopes of the Helderberg in Stellenbosch, an area particularly well suited to Cabernet Sauvignon. The estate’s Antigo vineyard is distinctive for its rich red clay soils, quite different from the sandstone and granite found elsewhere on the property. These soils help produce a softer, more plush expression of Cabernet, with generous fruit and gentler tannins. The name Antigo refers to the reddish-gold colour of these soils. The wine is a Bordeaux-style red blend led by Cabernet Sauvignon, with Cabernet Franc and Merlot adding layers and softness. At Waterford Estate, grapes are hand-harvested and sorted before whole berries are fermented. The wine is then matured in French oak, allowing the fruit and site character to remain at the centre while adding subtle spice and texture.
Colour: Deep ruby red with rich purple hues.
Nose: Ripe redcurrant and dark berry aromas lead, followed by hints of tobacco, cedar, subtle spice and creamy oak. There is a gentle savoury character beneath the fruit that adds depth without making the wine feel heavy.
Palate: Medium- to full-bodied, with generous red and dark fruit supported by fresh acidity. The Cabernet Sauvignon gives the wine structure, while Cabernet Franc and Merlot contribute softness and rounded fruit. Tannins are firm enough to provide shape but remain smooth and approachable, with well-integrated oak adding texture rather than dominating the fruit.
Finish: Long and textured, with lingering red fruit, gentle spice and a subtle savoury tobacco note.
- Food Pairing : The combination of ripe fruit, fresh acidity and smooth but present tannins makes Waterford Antigo 2022 a natural match for grilled or roasted meats. Try it with lamb chops, a roast leg of lamb, beef fillet or steak, or a rich mushroom and herb risotto. The wine’s Cabernet structure works particularly well with savoury, protein-rich dishes, while its softer red-fruit character and acidity keep richer meals from feeling too heavy.
