Neil Ellis Rodanos 2021
Produced by Neil Ellis Wines in Stellenbosch, the Neil Ellis Rodanos 2021 reflects the winery's long-standing philosophy of matching grape varieties to sites where they perform best. The name "Rodanos" is derived from the Celtic word for Rhône, paying tribute to the famous French region where Syrah and Grenache thrive. This wine brings together carefully selected fruit from Piekenierskloof and Groenekloof, two regions that offer contrasting but complementary growing conditions. Piekenierskloof's elevated vineyards contribute concentration and spice, while the cooler coastal influence of Groenekloof helps retain freshness and aromatic lift. Fermentation took place in stainless steel, with a portion of whole-bunch fermentation adding complexity and structure. The wine matured for 14 months in French oak barrels, allowing the fruit and savoury elements to integrate without overshadowing the vineyard character.
Colour: Deep ruby with a dark, youthful core and bright garnet edges.
Nose: Aromatic and expressive, showing dark cherries, blackberries and ripe plum, layered with violet perfume, cracked black pepper and subtle savoury spice.
Palate: Generous yet composed, with flavours of dark berries and black cherry supported by fine-grained tannins. The Syrah brings structure, spice and savoury depth, while the Grenache contributes fragrance and a supple texture. Fresh acidity keeps the wine focused and balanced throughout.
Finish: Long and persistent, finishing with notes of plum, pepper, dried herbs and gentle oak spice.
- Food Pairing : The Neil Ellis Rodanos 2021 pairs particularly well with slow-roasted lamb shoulder, Karoo lamb chops, venison pie or beef short ribs. The wine's combination of ripe fruit, savoury spice and fine tannins complements richly flavoured meats, while its freshness prevents heavier dishes from feeling overly rich. It also works well with hearty Mediterranean-style vegetable dishes, especially those featuring roasted aubergine, tomatoes and herbs.
