Morgenster Tosca 2022
Produced by Morgenster Estate at the foot of the Helderberg in Stellenbosch, Morgenster Tosca 2022 reflects the estate's unique connection to both South Africa and Italy. Established as one of South Africa's leading Bordeaux-style wine estates, Morgenster also champions Italian grape varieties, inspired by the vision of its late owner, Giulio Bertrand. Tosca is Morgenster's interpretation of a Super Tuscan-style blend, led by Sangiovese and supported by Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2022 vintage benefited from a cool, moderate growing season that allowed slow, even ripening and excellent flavour development. Each component was vinified separately before spending 12 months in French oak, with a portion matured in new barrels to add subtle complexity while preserving the wine's vibrant fruit character.
Colour: Bright ruby red with youthful crimson highlights and excellent clarity.
Nose: An expressive bouquet of ripe red cherries, cranberries and cassis is layered with aromas of tomato leaf, rosemary, thyme and subtle notes of sundried tomato. Gentle hints of cinnamon spice and coffee add further complexity.
Palate: Medium- to full-bodied with a vibrant, energetic character. Juicy red cherry, red plum and cranberry flavours are supported by soft, velvety tannins and bright natural acidity. The Sangiovese takes centre stage, bringing freshness and savoury complexity, while the Bordeaux varieties add structure and depth. The oak influence is integrated and understated, allowing the fruit and herbal nuances to remain the focus.
Finish: Long and elegant, with lingering red berry fruit, savoury herbs and a touch of spice that leaves the palate refreshed and ready for another sip.
- Food Pairing : Morgenster Tosca 2022 is a natural partner for Italian-inspired dishes such as spaghetti al pomodoro, rich beef bolognese and slow-cooked lamb ragĂč. The wine's bright acidity complements tomato-based sauces beautifully, while its savoury herbal notes work particularly well with rosemary-seasoned lamb, grilled beef and game dishes. The balance between freshness and fine tannins also makes it an excellent choice alongside mushroom risotto or roasted Mediterranean vegetables.
