Anthonij Rupert Merlot 2021
Anthonij Rupert Wines is rooted on the historic L'Ormarins Estate in Franschhoek, where the dramatic Groot Drakenstein mountains help shape a distinctive growing environment. For the Merlot 2021, fruit was sourced from vineyards in both Franschhoek and Darling, combining mountain-influenced elegance with the freshness that comes from the Cape's coastal climate. The estate is known for its meticulous vineyard selection and a winemaking philosophy that balances Old World restraint with modern precision. Hand-harvested grapes, careful berry selection and extended maturation in French oak contribute depth and complexity while allowing vineyard character to remain at the forefront.
Colour: Deep ruby with a rich garnet edge, showing excellent concentration and clarity in the glass.
Nose: Aromatic layers of plum, black cherry and dark berry fruit lead the way, followed by notes of dried lavender, tobacco leaf, cedar spice and a subtle dark chocolate character.
Palate: Velvety and polished from the first sip, this Merlot offers ripe plum and black fruit flavours supported by fine-grained tannins and fresh acidity. The texture is supple yet structured, with seamlessly integrated oak adding notes of cedar, cocoa and gentle spice. There is depth and complexity without heaviness, resulting in a poised and harmonious palate.
Finish: Long, smooth and persistent, with lingering notes of plum, tobacco leaf, cedar and savoury spice.
- Food Pairing : The texture and structure of the Anthonij Rupert Merlot 2021 make it a versatile partner at the table. It works particularly well with roast lamb, slow-cooked beef brisket, grilled pork loin or a hearty mushroom risotto. The wine's plush fruit profile complements richer dishes, while its freshness and refined tannins prevent the pairing from feeling heavy. Mature hard cheeses also bring out the wine's savoury tobacco and cedar nuances, making it an excellent choice for relaxed entertaining or a winter dinner around the table.
