Compass Box Spice Tree 750ml
Compass Box, founded by John Glaser in 2000, is known for pushing the boundaries of traditional Scotch whisky blending. Rather than distilling its own spirit, the house sources high-quality single malts from across Scotland - particularly the Highlands and Speyside - and crafts them into distinctive, small-batch blends.
The Spice Tree is one of Compass Box’s most recognised expressions, originally launched in 2005. Its defining feature is the use of custom-made hybrid casks - American oak bodies with heavily toasted French oak heads - designed to enhance spice character without overwhelming the whisky’s natural fruit and malt profile. This approach gives the whisky a layered, contemporary style that still respects classic Scotch structure, balancing innovation with drinkability.
Colour:
Warm amber with golden highlights, reflecting its time in toasted oak.
Nose:
Aromatic and layered, showing clove, cinnamon and ginger alongside vanilla and toasted oak. Subtle notes of dried fruit and citrus add lift.
Palate:
Medium to full-bodied, with a smooth, rounded texture. Flavours of baking spice, toffee and vanilla sit over a core of malty sweetness, with hints of orange peel and gentle peppery warmth.
Finish:
Medium to long, warming and spice-driven, with lingering oak, nutmeg and a touch of sweetness tapering cleanly.
- Food Pairing : Compass Box Spice Tree works particularly well after dinner, where its warming spice profile complements richer flavours. It pairs naturally with dark chocolate desserts or ginger-based puddings, echoing its clove and cinnamon notes. Mature cheeses - such as aged cheddar or gouda - balance the whisky’s sweetness with savoury depth. For a local twist, it also works alongside biltong or grilled lamb, where the spice and oak structure enhance the richness of the meat without overpowering it.
