Blaauwklippen Chardonnay 2024
Produced by Blaauwklippen Vineyards in Stellenbosch, this Chardonnay is sourced from vineyards in the Polkadraai Hills, where decomposed granite soils contribute mineral character and freshness. Blaauwklippen is one of Stellenbosch’s historic wine estates, having been established in 1682. Winemaker Narina Cloete uses careful vineyard management and gentle cellar practices to preserve the purity of the fruit. The hand-harvested grapes undergo whole-bunch pressing before the juice is transferred to 228-litre French oak barrels for fermentation. Regular bâtonnage, or lees stirring, builds texture and creaminess, while inhibited malolactic fermentation helps retain the wine’s natural acidity. Approximately 22% new oak was used, with the wine spending around 51 weeks on its gross lees in barrel. This contributes subtle brioche and creamy notes without overwhelming the citrus and mineral character.
Colour: Bright straw with a gentle golden hue.
Nose: Aromas of sweet lemon, orange blossom and white peach are layered with creamy brioche and delicate oak nuances.
Palate: Medium-bodied and textured, with vibrant citrus, ripe stone fruit and a pure mineral core. Fresh acidity brings energy and balance to the creamy mid-palate, while subtle oak adds depth and complexity.
Finish: Long, zesty and refined, with lingering citrus, orange blossom and gentle brioche notes.
- Food Pairing : The combination of creamy texture, fresh acidity and subtle oak makes Blaauwklippen Chardonnay 2024 particularly versatile with richer dishes. Try it with grilled tuna or salmon, roast chicken with a creamy sauce, buttery prawns, or a fragrant Thai or Indian curry. The wine's acidity keeps richer food feeling fresh, while its peach, citrus and gentle brioche character complement creamy sauces, lightly spiced dishes and the savoury richness of seafood. Blaauwklippen itself recommends the wine with richer Thai and Indian curries and tuna steaks.
