Ernie Els Proprietors Syrah 2023
Ernie Els Wines is situated on the slopes of the Helderberg in Stellenbosch, where elevated vineyards, decomposed granite soils and cooling Atlantic breezes create ideal conditions for structured, expressive red wines. Founded by golfing icon Ernie Els and guided by long-time winemaker Louis Strydom, the estate has earned a strong reputation for refined wines with depth, balance and ageing potential.
The Proprietors range sits above the easy-drinking styles of the Big Easy collection, offering more cellar focus and complexity. For the 2023 vintage, the Syrah grapes were hand-harvested in the cool early morning, with whole berries fermented in open-top tanks and barrels. A portion was whole bunch fermented to build aromatic detail, before ageing for 16 months in predominantly French oak, with a small component matured in terracotta amphora.
Colour:
Deep, dark ruby red with a youthful purple edge.
Nose:
Intense aromas of blackberry, plum and forest berries open first, followed by black pepper, violets, espresso, smoked meat and hints of Cape fynbos.
Palate:
Full-bodied and structured, with dense dark fruit wrapped around firm but polished tannins. Layers of ripe plum, raspberry and black cherry are balanced by savoury spice, fresh acidity and subtle oak influence. Powerful, yet controlled and composed.
Finish:
Long, dry and persistent, with lingering pepper spice, dark fruit and earthy savoury notes.
- Food Pairing : Ernie Els Proprietors Syrah 2023 is a natural partner for rich, flavourful dishes. Pair it with lamb rump, venison loin, braaied beef ribeye or slow-cooked short ribs, where the wine’s tannin structure and dark fruit depth complement robust proteins beautifully. It also works well with mushroom dishes, hard cheeses or rosemary roast vegetables, while the freshness keeps richer meals balanced and focused.
