Ernie Els Double Red 2024
Ernie Els Wines is located on the slopes of the Helderberg in Stellenbosch, one of South Africa’s leading regions for structured red wines. With granite-rich soils, warm daytime conditions and cooling Atlantic breezes from nearby False Bay, the vineyards enjoy a long ripening season that helps build flavour concentration while preserving freshness and tannin balance. Founded by golfing legend Ernie Els, the estate has earned a reputation for polished, cellar-worthy reds shaped by precision winemaking.
Ernie Els Double Red 2024, now part of the Major Series, brings together Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot in a classic Bordeaux-inspired blend. Fruit was hand-harvested in the cool morning, fermented parcel by parcel, and matured for 16 months in 300-litre French oak barrels, with a small portion of Cabernet Sauvignon aged in terracotta amphora. This layered approach adds texture and nuance while allowing vineyard character to remain central.
Colour:
Deep, opaque ruby red with a youthful crimson edge.
Nose:
Aromatic layers of black cherry, cassis and plum lead the way, followed by cedar, smoky spice, juniper and subtle mineral notes.
Palate:
Medium- to full-bodied, smooth and composed, with flavours of blackcurrant, dark cherry and ripe plum. Cabernet Sauvignon provides structure and length, while Merlot adds rounded texture and generosity through the mid-palate. Fine tannins and fresh acidity keep the wine focused rather than heavy.
Finish:
Long, polished and savoury, with lingering dark fruit, cedar spice and stony freshness.
- Food Pairing : Ernie Els Double Red 2024 is a natural fit for hearty, flavourful dishes such as roast lamb, grilled sirloin, beef short ribs or mushroom risotto. The tannin structure supports richer proteins, while the wine’s freshness keeps each bite balanced. It also works beautifully with mature cheddar or tomato-based pasta dishes, where the savoury depth of the blend complements slow-cooked flavours.
