Chamonix Cabernet Franc Reserve 2022
The Chamonix Cabernet Franc Reserve 2022 comes from Chamonix Wine Farm, a historic estate set against the dramatic slopes of the Mont Rochelle mountains in Franschhoek. The property forms part of the original Huguenot farm La Cotte, granted in the late 17th century, and today covers around 300 hectares with approximately 50 hectares planted to vine.
Â
Under the stewardship of owner Chris Hellinger and winemaker Neil Bruwer, Chamonix has focused on producing terroir-driven wines that balance Old World restraint with the natural richness of the Cape. The vineyards benefit from stony, clay-rich soils and cooling mountain breezes, which moderate the warm valley climate and allow grapes to ripen slowly while retaining freshness.
Â
For the Cabernet Franc Reserve 2022, grapes are hand-harvested from south- and south-west-facing vineyard slopes before undergoing careful berry selection. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel and concrete tanks, followed by 18 months of maturation in French oak barrels (around 20% new oak) to build structure while preserving varietal character.
Â
The result is a Cabernet Franc that reflects the elegance and savoury complexity the variety can achieve in Franschhoekâs mountain-influenced terroir.
Â
Colour:
Deep ruby red with bright garnet flashes, showing clarity and youthful intensity.
Â
Nose:
Aromatic and layered, with notes of redcurrant, raspberry and dark cherry followed by classic Cabernet Franc nuances of dried herbs, spice and subtle cigar-box complexity.
Â
Palate:
Medium-to-full bodied with a firm but polished structure. Concentrated red and dark berry fruit sits alongside savoury herbal notes, hints of cedar and gentle oak spice. Fine tannins and fresh acidity provide balance and length.
Â
Finish:
Long and structured, finishing with lingering red fruit, spice and a faint earthy savouriness.
- Food Pairing : The structured profile of Chamonix Cabernet Franc Reserve 2022 makes it an excellent companion for savoury, flavour-driven dishes. It pairs particularly well with roast lamb with rosemary or garlic, where the wineâs herbal notes echo the seasoning. Grilled beef sirloin or rump steak highlights the wineâs firm tannin structure, while roast chicken with root vegetables allows the red-berry fruit and spice to shine. For a vegetarian option, lentil and mushroom stew or roasted aubergine with tomato and herbs works beautifully, drawing out the wineâs earthy complexity while the acidity keeps the pairing balanced.
