Bellevue Reserve Cabernet Franc 2024
Bellevue Wine Estate, situated on the slopes of the Bottelary Hills in Stellenbosch, is one of South Africa’s historic family-owned properties, farmed by the Morkel family for generations. The area is known for its decomposed granite soils and elevated vineyard sites, which help Cabernet Franc develop both aromatic lift and structural depth. Cooling afternoon breezes from False Bay moderate ripening, allowing the grapes to retain freshness while achieving full phenolic maturity.
Bellevue has built a reputation for working confidently with classic Bordeaux varieties, particularly Cabernet Franc. Their approach balances tradition and clarity: careful vineyard selection, moderate extraction in the cellar, and maturation in French oak to add structure without overwhelming the fruit. The Reserve range reflects a step up in selection, focusing on vineyards and barrels that show greater concentration and ageing potential while still maintaining the estate’s hallmark drinkability.
Colour:
Deep ruby with a bright, youthful edge.
Nose:
Redcurrant and ripe plum lead, followed by dried herbs, graphite, and a subtle floral note. Gentle oak spice adds depth without dominating.
Palate:
Medium- to full-bodied with a smooth, refined texture. Flavours of red and dark berries are supported by fine, powdery tannins and fresh acidity. A savoury herbal thread runs through the mid-palate, adding complexity and keeping the wine focused.
Finish:
Long and composed, with lingering red fruit, spice, and a light earthy note.
- Food Pairing : Bellevue Reserve Cabernet Franc 2024 pairs naturally with dishes that mirror its balance of freshness and structure. It works well with herb-crusted lamb or grilled beef fillet, where the wine’s fine tannins and savoury notes complement the richness of the meat. Tomato-based dishes like slow-cooked oxtail or pasta with a rich ragu also suit its acidity and depth. For something more relaxed, try it with charcuterie or a mushroom risotto - the earthy elements in the wine echo these flavours while the acidity keeps the palate fresh.
