Survivor Terroir Syrah 2024
Survivor Terroir Syrah 2024 reflects the character of the Swartland, a warm, dry wine-growing region north of Cape Town. Its Mediterranean climate, varied soils and cooling maritime influences help produce Syrah with ripe dark fruit, savoury complexity and distinctive spice. Survivor Wines works with selected vineyard parcels across South Africa, with winemaker Pierre Wahl focusing on expressing the character of each region. The Syrah grapes for this wine come from low-yielding, trellised vineyards planted on Hutton soils in the Swartland. These well-drained soils, together with the region's growing conditions, help support concentrated fruit and structure. The grapes are hand-harvested in the early morning to preserve freshness. Whole-bunch fermentation contributes aromatic complexity and a savoury edge, while maturation in French oak barrels builds texture and adds gentle spice. The winemaking approach aims to retain the variety's natural peppery character while developing depth and a rounded palate. The result is a full-bodied South African Syrah that combines dark fruit, fragrant spice and a savoury sense of place.
Colour: Deep red with an intense, dark core.
Nose: Ripe plum and bramble berries lead, followed by cracked black pepper, coriander and liquorice. Subtle oak spice and fragrant fynbos notes add a distinctly savoury dimension.
Palate: Full-bodied and generously textured, with dark berry and plum flavours supported by peppery spice and hints of liquorice. The palate has a velvety feel, with structured tannins providing grip and freshness helping to keep the rich fruit in balance. Oak adds depth without taking centre stage.
Finish: Long and lingering, with dark fruit, savoury herbs and a final impression of peppery spice and fynbos.
- Food Pairing : Survivor Terroir Syrah 2024 is a natural partner for Karoo lamb chops from the braai, grilled beef steak or slow-cooked beef short ribs. Its dark fruit and peppery character complement charred meat and savoury marinades, while its tannins work well with the richness of the protein. For something different, try it with ostrich fillet, a hearty beef potjie or mature blue cheese. The wine's generous texture and spice stand up to robust flavours, while its savoury finish complements herbs and smoky notes.
