Stellenzicht Arenite Syrah 2024
Stellenzicht Wines is situated in the Helderberg area of Stellenbosch, where mountain slopes, varied soils and maritime influences contribute to the character of its wines. The estate places emphasis on expressing the vineyard environment, with sustainable farming practices and a focus on the relationship between soil, climate and grape variety. The name Arenite refers to the sandstone soil formations found on the farm, where the Syrah vines grow among rocky terrain. Stellenzicht Arenite Syrah 2024 is made from 100% Syrah, with the grapes hand-harvested in the morning to preserve their freshness. Approximately half the fruit undergoes whole-bunch fermentation, adding savoury complexity and structure. The wine is then matured for up to 15 months in French oak barrels, with minimal new oak, allowing the dark fruit and distinctive spice of Syrah to remain at the forefront.
Colour: Deep ruby red with youthful purple hues, showing rich colour and concentration in the glass.
Nose: Aromas of ripe blackberries and dark cherries lead, followed by hints of allspice and savoury herbs. The fruit is complemented by subtle earthy notes, reflecting the wine’s rocky origins and the influence of whole-bunch fermentation.
Palate: Full-bodied and richly textured, with layers of dark berry fruit supported by warming spice and savoury complexity. The whole-bunch fermentation adds an appealing herbal edge, while finely textured tannins give the wine structure and a rounded, generous feel. Subtle French oak adds depth without overpowering the fruit.
Finish: Lush and persistent, with dark fruit, lingering spice and a savoury undertone. The tannins leave a smooth, coating impression that gives the finish both richness and structure.
- Food Pairing : Stellenzicht Arenite Syrah 2024 pairs beautifully with grilled lamb chops seasoned with rosemary and black pepper, as the wine’s dark fruit and savoury spice complement the richness of the meat. It is equally suited to a beef braai or slow-cooked beef short ribs, where charred flavours and tender meat work well with its structured tannins. For something different, try lamb curry with warming spices, which echo the wine’s allspice character without overwhelming its fruit. A hearty roasted mushroom dish with garlic and thyme is a good vegetarian alternative, bringing out the wine’s earthy and herbal notes.
