Stellenzicht Arenite Syrah 2023
Stellenzicht is a historic Stellenbosch property on the lower slopes of the Helderberg, with a long-standing reputation for Syrah. The name Arenite refers to the sandstone rock formations found on the farm, where the vines for this wine are planted. These rocky soils, together with the Helderberg's mountain influence, help give the wine its combination of dark-fruit concentration, savoury character and finely textured tannins. Stellenzicht's Syrah heritage stretches back decades, including the acclaimed 1994 vintage that brought the estate international attention. The 2023 grapes were hand harvested in the morning, with approximately half fermented as whole bunches. Fermentation lasted 10â12 days, followed by extended skin contact and maturation in French oak barrels, with minimal new oak, for up to 15 months. This restrained use of oak allows the sandstone-derived character and Syrah fruit to remain at the centre of the wine.
Colour:Â Deep ruby-red with a dark purple core.
Nose:Â Rich blackberry, black cherry and plum lead into violets, cracked black pepper and allspice. Subtle herbal and savoury notes add complexity behind the ripe fruit.
Palate:Â Full-flavoured but fresh, with layers of dark berry and plum supported by lively acidity and finely textured tannins. Whole-bunch fermentation brings an appealing savoury and spicy dimension, while restrained French oak adds depth rather than obvious oak flavour. The tannins have a rounded, almost velvety feel, giving the wine both structure and generosity.Â
Finish:Â Long and savoury, with dark berries, pepper, warm spice and polished tannins lingering on the palate.
- Food Pairing : Stellenzicht Arenite Syrah 2023 has the fruit concentration and tannin structure to stand up to hearty dishes, making it an excellent choice with a rib-eye or sirloin steak, lamb chops, slow-roasted beef, venison or smoky braai meats. Its peppery, savoury character also works beautifully with mushroom dishes and roasted vegetables, while the fresh acidity keeps richer meats and sauces from feeling too heavy.
