Savage Red 2023
Savage Red is made by Duncan Savage of Savage Wines from a single vineyard on the Langverwagt farm in Kuils River, on the edge of Stellenbosch. The site is characterised by decomposed granite soils, which contribute both concentration and the fine, firm tannin structure that gives this Syrah its shape and longevity. The 2023 vintage was picked before the later harvest rains, allowing the fruit to retain the purity and freshness that Duncan Savage particularly valued in the vintage. In the cellar, the grapes underwent whole-bunch fermentation, with the 2023 vintage incorporating both whole-cluster fruit and submerged-cap fermentation. The wine was matured for 13 months in older 500-litre French oak barrels, followed by extended maturation in foudre. No new oak is used, keeping the focus firmly on the Syrah, vineyard and vintage rather than oak flavour.
Colour: Deep ruby red with a youthful purple edge.
Nose: Beautifully aromatic, with red and black berries, plum and blackberry alongside rose petals, violets and fynbos. White pepper is a distinctive feature, with savoury notes of tobacco leaf, herbs, tapenade and subtle spice adding complexity.
Palate: Elegant and focused rather than heavy, with pure berry and plum fruit carried by lively acidity and fine, powdery tannins. The decomposed granite gives the wine a firm mineral backbone, while whole-bunch fermentation contributes spice, floral character and savoury depth. There is excellent concentration without sacrificing freshness or lift.
Finish: Long and savoury, with blackberry, plum, white pepper, herbs and a subtle saline-mineral character lingering on the palate.
- Food Pairing : Savage Red 2023 is an elegant but structured Syrah that works particularly well with grilled lamb chops, roast lamb, beef fillet, venison, duck or slow-cooked beef short ribs. Its fresh acidity helps cut through richer meats, while the fine tannins and peppery, savoury character complement grilled, roasted and herb-seasoned dishes. For something less traditional, try it with a mushroom and lentil ragĂč, where the wine's earthy and savoury notes echo the dish beautifully.
