Rust en Vrede Estate Vineyards Syrah 2022 (Top 12)
Established in 1694, Rust en Vrede is one of Stellenbosch's historic wine estates. Since 1977, the Engelbrecht family has focused on producing red wines, particularly Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Merlot. The estate's vineyards benefit from the Stellenbosch climate and the varied soils of the region, with the Estate Vineyards Syrah drawing on 7 hectares of Syrah planted on the property. The Rust en Vrede Estate Vineyards Syrah 2022 is made from hand-harvested grapes, with individual parcels and clones vinified separately. Fermentation takes place in open-top fermenters, with manual punch-downs and pump-overs two to four times daily. Maceration continues for 14–21 days, followed by 18 months of maturation in 500-litre French oak barrels. The oak regime uses predominantly seasoned barrels, allowing the wine's fruit, savoury character and structure to remain central.
Colour: Deep, intense ruby red.
Nose: Juicy black cherry, blueberry and blackcurrant lead the aromas, followed by violet perfume and savoury notes of leather, sandalwood and nutmeg.
Palate: Elegant and structured, with concentrated black fruit supported by ripe, refined tannins and balanced acidity. Layers of black pepper, cinnamon, cured meat and paprika add savoury depth, while the fruit keeps the palate expressive and generous.
Finish: Long and lingering, with black cherry, spice and a refined savoury impression.
- Food Pairing : Rust en Vrede Estate Vineyards Syrah 2022 is a natural partner for herb-crusted lamb shank, grilled venison with berry jus, slow-braised beef brisket or a rich mushroom and rosemary risotto. Its concentrated dark fruit, fine tannins and savoury spice work well with slow-cooked and grilled dishes, while the acidity helps keep richer sauces and meat-based meals from feeling too heavy. The wine's peppery character also makes it a good match for a well-seasoned South African braai.
