Rietvallei Shiraz 2023
Rietvallei Wine Estate is a fourth-generation family-owned estate in the Robertson Wine Valley, where the Burger family has been crafting wines since 1864. The estate's limestone-rich soils, warm days and cool evenings create ideal conditions for producing Shiraz with ripe fruit, vibrant acidity and refined structure. The Shiraz vineyards, planted in 2005 on north-west-facing slopes of calcareous red clay and limestone soils, are managed for low yields and optimal fruit quality. After natural fermentation with wild yeasts, the wine matures for 12 months in second- and third-fill French oak barrels, allowing the expressive fruit and peppery character of the vineyard to remain the focus.
Colour: Deep ruby red with an intense, youthful appearance.
Nose: Aromatic layers of blackberry, ripe plum and dark cherry are complemented by cracked black pepper, violets, gentle toasted oak and a touch of spice.
Palate: Full-bodied and generous, with concentrated berry fruit supported by ripe, smooth tannins. Notes of black pepper, subtle toast and warm spice add complexity, while balanced acidity keeps the palate fresh and harmonious.
Finish: Long and lingering, with persistent dark fruit, pepper spice and delicate oak carrying through to a smooth, satisfying finish.
- Food Pairing : The Rietvallei Shiraz 2023 is an excellent partner for a South African braai, particularly grilled lamb chops, beef sirloin or venison, where its ripe berry fruit and peppery spice complement smoky, chargrilled flavours. It also pairs beautifully with slow-cooked beef stew, rich tomato-based pasta dishes or gourmet pizzas. The wine's smooth tannins and balanced acidity provide enough structure for hearty meals while remaining approachable enough for relaxed entertaining.
- Drink before: Cellaring potential: Enjoy now for its generous fruit or cellar for 6â10 years under ideal conditions, where it will continue to develop savoury complexity.
