Mont Rochelle Syrah 2023
Mont Rochelle Mountain Vineyards is situated in the Franschhoek Valley, where vineyards climb the slopes of the surrounding mountains. The varied elevations of the estate's Shiraz vineyards, ranging from approximately 200 to 450 metres above sea level, contribute to differences in grape ripening and flavour development. This mountain-influenced setting helps create wines with both ripe fruit character and freshness. The Mont Rochelle Syrah 2023 reflects a more traditional, Old World approach to Syrah, favouring pepper, herbs and savoury complexity alongside dark fruit. Winemaker Michael Langenhoven hand-harvested the grapes on 27 February 2023, and the wine matured for 18 months in French oak. The oak adds depth and structure while allowing the variety's natural fruit and spice to remain at the forefront.
Colour: Deep ruby red with youthful purple hues.
Nose: A fragrant combination of ripe red and dark berries, with violet florals, white pepper and clove spice. As the wine opens, savoury herbal notes add complexity to the fruit.
Palate: Full-bodied yet elegant, with juicy red fruit and darker berry flavours supported by fresh acidity and polished tannins. White pepper and clove bring a savoury edge, while French oak adds subtle depth without overpowering the fruit. The overall style favours freshness and refinement over excessive weight.
Finish: Long and gently savoury, with lingering berry fruit, peppery spice and a refined tannic finish.
- Food Pairing : Mont Rochelle Syrah 2023 is a natural match for grilled lamb chops with rosemary, beef steak with black pepper sauce, slow-roasted beef, or venison with roasted root vegetables. The wine's ripe berry fruit complements the savoury flavours of grilled and roasted meat, while its peppery spice echoes herbs such as rosemary and thyme. For a relaxed South African braai, try it with lamb sosaties or well-seasoned beef, where the wine's freshness and polished tannins help balance the richness of the meat.
