Lomond Cats Tail Syrah 2020
Situated near Gansbaai in the Cape Agulhas appellation, Lomond Wine Estate is one of South Africa's most southerly wine farms. The estate benefits from constant cooling winds off the Atlantic Ocean, allowing grapes to ripen slowly and retain freshness while developing flavour complexity. The vineyards are planted across a remarkable diversity of soils, including sandstone, shale and decomposed granite, with each site carefully matched to the variety best suited to it. The Cat's Tail Syrah forms part of Lomond's Single Vineyard range and is named after a rare indigenous fynbos species found in the Agulhas region. The vineyard is planted on koffieklip and weathered granite soils close to the ocean, producing a Syrah that reflects both the maritime climate and the distinctive terroir of Cape Agulhas. Careful oak maturation enhances structure and complexity while preserving the wine's naturally expressive character.
Colour: Deep ruby red with excellent depth and clarity.
Nose: Fragrant aromas of blackberry, black cherry and plum are layered with cracked black pepper, violets, fynbos and subtle savoury spice. As the wine opens, hints of dark chocolate and cedar emerge.
Palate: Medium- to full-bodied with concentrated dark fruit flavours supported by fine tannins and vibrant acidity. Notes of black pepper, spice and cocoa add complexity, while the cool-climate origin brings freshness and precision. The texture is smooth and structured rather than heavy, showcasing a more restrained expression of Syrah.
Finish: Long and savoury, with lingering dark fruit, floral notes and a distinctive peppery character.
- Food Pairing : The savoury spice and refined structure of the Lomond Cat's Tail Syrah 2020 make it an excellent partner for grilled lamb chops, Karoo lamb shoulder, venison, beef short ribs and slow-cooked oxtail. The wine's peppery character complements smoky braai flavours beautifully, while its fresh acidity prevents richer dishes from feeling overly heavy. It also pairs well with mushroom-based dishes and mature hard cheeses, which highlight the wine's earthy and floral nuances.
