La Motte Reserve Collection Syrah 2022
La Motte sits in the Franschhoek Valley, with vineyards on sandstone and mixed soils at elevations that favour elegant Syrah expression: perfumed red‑berry fruit with a savoury undercurrent. The Reserve Collection Syrah is estate‑grown and vinified to show the site rather than heavy extraction - grapes are destemmed, fermented with careful aeration and matured in 300‑litre French oak (a mix of new, second‑fill and older barrels). The winery combines traditional French influence with modern South African viticulture: careful canopy work, measured oak use and modest intervention to preserve varietal clarity.
Colour:
Violet‑red with a clear core and bright rim, medium depth.
Nose:
Ripe mulberry and black cherry at first, with savoury black‑olive and a faint anise/white‑pepper lift. Subtle toasted spice from barrel maturation supports the fruit rather than dominating it.
Palate:
Medium‑bodied and juicy, with vibrant cherry/mulberry fruit up front and a smooth, mellow mid‑palate. Fine tannins and balanced acidity give shape; the 15% Durif component adds colour and a touch of structure while oak (15 months in 300L barrels, part new/part used) provides integrated spice and texture. The overall mouthfeel is polished and food‑friendly.
Finish:
Generous, finishing on ripe cherry, olive‑savoury hints and a dry, spicy thread that leaves the wine poised for another sip.
- Food Pairing : This Syrah is an easy table wine for richer, savoury dishes: try it with braaied or grilled lamb chops (rosemary and garlic), pepper‑crusted beef or venison medallions, or a slow‑braised beef pot with reduced jus — the wine’s savoury olive notes and mid‑palate weight stand up to char and hearty sauces. It also works well with mushroom‑forward dishes (mushroom risotto or a mushroom tart) where the wine’s earthy and peppery details echo the food, and with mature hard cheeses (aged Gouda or Cheddar) that highlight the wine’s fruit and spice without overwhelming it.
- Drink before: Drink now–2032. The wine is medium‑bodied and approachable now, but has enough oak, tannin and fruit concentration to develop more savoury complexity over the next 6–10 years if stored sensibly.
