Klein Welmoed is situated on the lower slopes of Stellenbosch, where the proximity to False Bay brings cooling ocean breezes that help preserve freshness and natural acidity in the fruit. The Foothills range focuses on expressing these site-specific conditions - particularly the balance between ripeness and restraint that coastal Stellenbosch can offer.

The approach in the cellar is relatively hands-off, aiming to let the Syrah speak clearly of its origin. Fermentation techniques favour gentle extraction, while oak maturation is used to support structure rather than dominate. The result is a Syrah that leans toward a more modern, medium-bodied style - showcasing spice, purity of fruit, and a subtle savoury character rather than heaviness.

Colour:
Deep ruby with a bright, youthful rim.

Nose:
Red and black berries lead - think raspberry and plum - layered with black pepper, violets, and a touch of smoky spice. Subtle hints of olive and fynbos add complexity.

Palate:
Medium-bodied with a smooth, approachable texture. Juicy red fruit sits alongside savoury spice, with fine tannins and a fresh line of acidity keeping everything lifted and balanced. The style is more elegant than dense, with good clarity of flavour.

Finish:
Clean and moderately long, with lingering spice, red fruit, and a gentle savoury note.
