Hartenberg Shiraz 2022
Hartenberg Estate, situated in the Bottelary Hills of Stellenbosch, has a long-standing reputation for producing distinctive South African Shiraz. The estate bottled its first Shiraz in 1968, and the variety has remained central to its winemaking identity ever since. The estate's gravelly soils are particularly well suited to Shiraz, helping produce concentrated fruit and wines with depth and structure. The 2022 vintage benefited from hot, dry growing conditions, resulting in smaller, concentrated berries. The grapes were hand-picked and the wine matured for 18 months in French oak barrels, with 30% new oak used to add complexity while allowing the fruit and savoury character of the variety to remain in focus. Hartenberg Shiraz 2022 brings together Stellenbosch fruit, careful vineyard selection and measured oak maturation in a style that combines ripe New World fruit with the savoury spice associated with classic Shiraz.
Colour: Deep ruby red with a dark, youthful core.
Nose: Floral aromas lead into blackberry and mulberry, with hints of sage, black pepper and leather adding a savoury dimension.
Palate: Medium to full-bodied, with concentrated dark berry fruit and a gently savoury, herbaceous character. Well-developed tannins provide structure without overwhelming the fruit, while fresh acidity keeps the palate lively. Subtle oak adds depth and spice rather than dominating the wine.
Finish: Fresh and juicy, with lingering dark fruit, savoury herbs and a touch of spice.
- Food Pairing : Hartenberg Shiraz 2022 is a natural match for grilled lamb chops, a pepper-crusted steak or slow-cooked beef short ribs, where the wine's dark fruit, savoury spice and structured tannins complement the richness of the meat. For a relaxed South African pairing, serve it with biltong and mature cheddar, which echo its savoury character. It also works well with a hearty beef potjie, where the slow-cooked meat, herbs and gentle spices complement the wine's depth while its fresh acidity helps keep each mouthful inviting.
