Guardian Peak Shiraz 2024
Guardian Peak was established in 1998 by Jean Engelbrecht, with the aim of producing fresh, approachable wines that offer good everyday drinking without sacrificing character. The name comes from the prominent peak on Stellenbosch Mountain, and the brand is closely associated with the Stellenbosch wine region. Guardian Peak sources grapes from respected growers across the Cape, working with long-term vineyard partners to maintain consistency from vintage to vintage. The wines are made by the Guardian Peak team, with Duran Cornhill listed as winemaker. The Guardian Peak Shiraz 2024 follows the house style of ripe fruit, freshness and restrained oak. The wine is made using a combination of open- and closed-top stainless-steel fermenters to preserve the natural fruit character of the Shiraz. After fermentation, it is matured for around six months in seasoned French oak barrels, adding gentle spice and texture without overwhelming the fruit.
Colour: Deep ruby red with youthful purple highlights.
Nose: Ripe plum and juicy blackcurrant lead the nose, followed by red and black cherry. Cinnamon, clove and a touch of black pepper add warmth and spice.
Palate: Medium-bodied and fruit-forward, with juicy plum, blackberry and cherry flavours. Fresh acidity gives the wine energy, while plush, supple tannins provide structure without making it feel heavy. The six months in seasoned French oak contribute subtle spice and savoury depth rather than obvious oak flavours.
Finish: Smooth and juicy, with lingering plum, cherry and white pepper notes and a gently spicy finish.
- Food Pairing : The juicy fruit, fresh acidity and soft tannins of Guardian Peak Shiraz 2024 make it an easy match for steak, burgers, barbecue ribs, lamb chops and sausages. Its plum and blackcurrant fruit work particularly well with smoky, charred flavours, while the pepper and gentle spice complement grilled meats and hearty dishes without overpowering them.
- Drink before: Cellaring potential: Best enjoyed over the next few years, while its fresh fruit, supple tannins and spice are at their most expressive.
