Benguela Cove Estate Syrah / Shiraz 2022
Benguela Cove Wine Estate lies near Hermanus at the start of the Walker Bay wine region, one of South Africa’s most distinctive cool-climate wine areas. With vineyards positioned close to the Atlantic Ocean, the estate benefits from strong maritime influence, moderating temperatures and allowing grapes to ripen slowly while retaining freshness and aromatic detail.
The estate has become known for producing polished, site-driven wines that balance fruit expression with restraint. For the Benguela Cove Estate Syrah / Shiraz 2022, the fruit was harvested from north-facing vineyards planted on chalk-rich soils and iron laterites. A combination of whole bunches and destemmed berries was used during fermentation to build aromatic complexity and structure, before the wine matured for approximately 20 months in French oak barrels. The style leans toward a cooler-climate interpretation of Syrah - savoury, perfumed and structured rather than overtly ripe or jammy.
Colour:
Deep ruby with youthful purple flashes at the rim.
Nose:
Expressive aromas of cherry, plum and blueberry lead the nose, layered with violets, cracked black pepper, smoked meat and subtle fynbos notes. Hints of graphite, leather and dark spice emerge with time in the glass.
Palate:
Full-bodied yet finely textured, with juicy dark berry fruit balanced by savoury spice and fresh acidity. Silky tannins provide structure without heaviness, while the cool-climate character keeps the wine focused and energetic. Subtle oak adds depth and warmth rather than sweetness.
Finish:
Long and gently savoury, with lingering notes of dark chocolate, white pepper and smoky herbs.
- Food Pairing : Benguela Cove Estate Syrah / Shiraz 2022 pairs especially well with richly flavoured dishes that complement its savoury spice and dark fruit profile. Lamb tagine, Rogan Josh curry, venison pie or smoky braaied lamb chops all work beautifully with the wine’s structured tannins and vibrant acidity. The peppery Syrah character also suits Mediterranean-style dishes and slow-cooked stews, while the freshness from the Walker Bay climate keeps the pairing balanced rather than overly heavy.
