Anthonij Rupert Syrah 2021
Situated at the foot of the Groot Drakenstein Mountains in the Franschhoek Valley, Anthonij Rupert Wyne is renowned for producing wines that express both site and variety with clarity and restraint. Named after Anthonij Rupert, whose vision helped shape one of South Africa's leading wine estates, the winery focuses on meticulous vineyard selection and minimal intervention in the cellar. The Syrah grapes for this wine are sourced from carefully chosen sites that combine favourable soils, altitude and climatic conditions to achieve optimal ripeness while preserving freshness. Traditional winemaking techniques, combined with maturation in French oak, allow the wine to develop complexity without losing its sense of place. The result is a Syrah that reflects the elegance and structure for which both Franschhoek and the estate have become known.
Colour: Deep ruby red with a youthful garnet edge and impressive concentration.
Nose: Expressive aromas of blackberries, dark plum and black cherry are layered with cracked black pepper, violets and hints of fynbos. Subtle notes of cedar, clove and smoked meat emerge as the wine opens.
Palate: Medium- to full-bodied with a refined texture and finely integrated tannins. Ripe dark fruit flavours are balanced by savoury spice, black olive and subtle earthy nuances. Fresh acidity provides energy and definition, while judicious oak maturation contributes complexity rather than dominance.
Finish: Long and persistent, with lingering dark berry fruit, white pepper and a savoury mineral character that continues well after the last sip.
- Food Pairing : Anthonij Rupert Syrah 2021 is particularly well suited to roast lamb, Karoo lamb chops, venison loin, beef short ribs and slow-cooked oxtail. The wine's savoury spice and firm structure complement richly flavoured meats, while its fresh acidity helps balance dishes with higher fat content. It also pairs beautifully with rosemary, thyme and smoky braai flavours, making it an excellent choice for both formal dining and relaxed South African gatherings.
