Silkweaver Sangiovese 2023 (Diners)
Sangiovese
Description
The Silkweaver Sangiovese 2023, crafted by winemaker Jasper Raats, is a distinctive Stellenbosch interpretation of one of Italy’s most famous red grape varieties. The wine takes its name from a little-known chapter of South African history: a group of Italian immigrants who arrived in the 1800s to establish a silk industry near Knysna. Their story of perseverance inspired the name “Silkweaver,” connecting the wine to both heritage and craftsmanship.
The grapes come from a single vineyard on the lower south-western slopes of the Helderberg in Stellenbosch. Decomposed granite soils over clay, combined with cooling maritime breezes from False Bay, allow the fruit to ripen evenly while retaining natural acidity. The vines are trained on an Italian pergola trellising system, and the grapes are hand-harvested before natural fermentation and careful maturation in French oak barrels for around 15–16 months.
This thoughtful approach results in a wine that reflects both the structure of classic Sangiovese and the freshness typical of the Helderberg’s maritime climate.
Colour:
Bright ruby with a garnet edge, showing moderate depth typical of Sangiovese.
Nose:
Expressive aromas of dark berry fruit and redcurrant lead the bouquet, followed by hints of cedar, dried herbs and warm spice.
Palate:
Medium-bodied with vibrant red and dark berry fruit at the core. Flavours of mulberry, cherry and subtle spice unfold across the palate, supported by firm but polished tannins that give the wine structure without heaviness.
Finish:
Long and savoury, with lingering berry fruit, cedar and a gentle herbal note.

- Food Pairing : The vibrant acidity and savoury tannins of Silkweaver Sangiovese 2023 make it an excellent partner for dishes that combine richness with herbs. It pairs naturally with grilled lamb chops or slow-roasted lamb shoulder, where the wine’s acidity balances the richness of the meat. Tomato-based pasta dishes such as ragù or lasagne also work well, echoing the wine’s Italian varietal roots. For something more local, try it with a mushroom risotto or roasted Mediterranean vegetables - dishes that complement the wine’s earthy complexity while allowing its bright fruit to shine.
