Simonsig Redhill Pinotage 2016 (Older Vintage)
Simonsig Family Vineyards is a pioneering Stellenbosch estate with Pinotage at the heart of its history. Founder Frans Malan released Simonsig's first red wine, a Pinotage, in 1970, and the estate has continued to develop the variety for more than five decades. Redhill Pinotage takes its name from the distinctive red soils of the dedicated vineyard site at Simonsig. These soils originate from decomposed shale and are valued for their combination of moisture retention and drainage, helping produce concentrated red wines. The 2016 Redhill Pinotage was made by cellar master and winemaker Johan Malan. The wine was produced as a full-bodied, wood-matured expression of Pinotage, with 15 months of maturation in oak. The 2016 vintage was a dry, healthy growing season, producing grapes with good concentration of colour and fruit. This is an older-vintage Pinotage that demonstrates why Redhill has become one of Simonsig's signature wines: generous South African fruit is given time and oak to develop a deeper, more savoury character, while the underlying tannin and acidity provide structure.
Colour: Deep, dense ruby-red, approaching garnet at the rim with maturity.
Nose: Dark blackberry and ripe plum lead the aromatics, with layers of sweet spice and cedar oak. With some time in the glass, more savoury notes of tobacco, dried herbs and subtle earthy spice emerge.
Palate: Full-bodied and richly textured, with concentrated black fruit and sweet plum at the core. The wine has a generous, rounded mouthfeel, supported by smooth, mature tannins and fresh acidity. Oak contributes cedar, spice and a subtle savoury character, while the years in bottle have allowed the fruit, oak and tannin to integrate.
Finish: Long and lingering, with dark fruit, cedar spice and savoury tobacco notes carrying through the finish.
- Food Pairing : As a mature, full-bodied Pinotage, the Simonsig Redhill 2016 is particularly well suited to Cape Malay bobotie, slow-roasted pork belly, roast lamb, grilled or braised beef and crispy duck. Its ripe dark fruit and gentle sweetness of oak work naturally with richly spiced and roasted flavours, while the mature tannins provide enough structure for red meat without becoming too firm. For a distinctly South African pairing, bobotie remains an especially natural match.
- Drink before: Cellaring potential: Originally recommended for 6â8 years after vintage. At this stage, the 2016 is a mature wine and is best enjoyed now rather than bought specifically for further long-term ageing.
