Flagstone Writers Block Pinotage 2022 (Top 10)
Flagstone Wines is based in Somerset West and has become known for producing contemporary South African wines that combine regional character with an approachable, polished style. Operating from a converted dynamite factory near the Cape coastline, the cellar benefits from cooling maritime influence that helps preserve freshness and balance in the vineyards.
The Writer’s Block range focuses on expressive, small-batch wines that highlight varietal character without excessive oak or extraction. The Pinotage 2022 is crafted to show a more refined interpretation of South Africa’s signature grape, balancing ripe fruit with savoury detail and structure. Fruit is sourced from selected Western Cape vineyards, with careful cellar handling and measured oak maturation helping to soften the wine while retaining freshness and texture.
Colour:
Deep ruby with a dense garnet core and vibrant edge.
Nose:
Aromas of blackberry, black cherry and ripe plum lead into notes of mocha, sweet spice and smoky oak. Hints of vanilla, roasted coffee bean and dried herbs add depth and complexity.
Palate:
Full-bodied and smooth, with generous dark berry fruit balanced by fine tannins and fresh acidity. Layers of plum, mulberry and black cherry are supported by subtle oak spice and earthy savoury notes. The palate feels rounded and concentrated without becoming overly heavy or sweet.
Finish:
Long and warming, with lingering dark fruit, cocoa and gentle smoky spice.
- Food Pairing : Flagstone Writer’s Block Pinotage 2022 pairs naturally with richly flavoured comfort food and braai dishes. Sticky barbecue ribs, chargrilled burgers or slow-cooked lamb shank all complement the wine’s dark fruit and smoky spice profile. The wine’s soft tannins and ripe texture also work well with bobotie, mature cheddar or mushroom-based dishes, where the savoury depth and gentle acidity help balance richer flavours without overwhelming the palate.
