Eagle's Cliff Pinotage 2022 (Diners)
Eagle's Cliff is a Western Cape label focused on approachable, fruit-driven wines that reflect the character of South Africa’s most distinctive grape varieties. Pinotage - a crossing of Pinot Noir and Cinsault developed in South Africa in the early 20th century - remains the flagship variety, capable of producing wines that combine generous fruit with earthy complexity.
The grapes for Eagle's Cliff Pinotage 2022 are sourced from selected vineyards in the Western Cape, where warm days encourage full ripening while cooler evening temperatures help preserve freshness. Careful fermentation and moderate oak maturation allow the wine to retain its varietal identity while adding subtle depth and structure.
The result is a Pinotage that aims to showcase the grape’s hallmark richness while remaining balanced and food friendly.
Colour:
Deep ruby with a youthful purple rim, bright and clear in the glass.
Nose:
Ripe plum, blackberry and dark cherry aromas lead the nose, followed by subtle notes of mocha, sweet spice and a touch of smoky earthiness.
Palate:
Medium- to full-bodied with juicy dark fruit at the core. Flavours of black plum and mulberry are supported by soft tannins and gentle oak spice, while a touch of savoury character adds depth without overwhelming the fruit.
Finish:
Smooth and persistent, finishing with lingering dark fruit and a hint of cocoa and spice.
- Food Pairing : The ripe fruit and supple tannins of Eagle's Cliff Pinotage 2022 make it a versatile partner for hearty South African dishes. It works particularly well with braaied boerewors or flame-grilled burgers, where the smoky flavours complement the wine’s dark fruit and spice. Sticky barbecue ribs or slow-braised lamb shank also pair beautifully, as the wine’s richness stands up to the depth of the dish. For a vegetarian option, chargrilled aubergine or mushroom-based dishes echo the wine’s earthy undertones while allowing the fruit to remain the focus.
