The Drift There Are Still Mysteries 2019
Perched between 400 m and 520 m above sea level on the wind-sculpted slopes of the Akkedisberg, The Drift Estate is part of South Africa’s emerging Agulhas Wine Triangle, near Napier in the Southern Cape. Here, cool maritime breezes and ancient sandstone and shale soils create a naturally brisk environment that suits sensitive varietals like Pinot Noir. The Drift’s approach is quietly rigorous: low yields from a single vineyard, gentle handling in the cellar, and a focus on site expression over flashy manipulation. The result is a Pinot Noir that feels both elegant and evocative of its distinct cool-climate terroir - an experience rather than a stereotype.
Colour: A medium ruby with translucent edges, glinting with youthful vibrancy in the glass.
Nose: Fresh ripe strawberry and ripe red cherry form the core, layered with plum, subtle cardamom spice, thyme and a whisper of toasty cinnamon. Soft herbal undertones add nuance without overwhelming the fruit.
Palate: Medium-bodied with a gentle yet persistent line of acidity, this Pinot Noir unravels juicy red fruits - strawberry, rhubarb and nectarine - framed by savoury garden herbs and a hint of chocolate-tinged spice. Silky tannins give texture without grip, and the wine’s freshness balances the subtle complexity.
Finish: Long and poised, with lingering red fruit warmth, soft spice and a suggestion of herbaceous depth that invites contemplation.
- Food Pairing : The Drift There Are Still Mysteries 2019 is wonderfully versatile at the table thanks to its freshness and refined structure. Try it with seared duck breast glazed with a red berry jus - the wine’s juicy acidity and red fruit notes will mirror the dish nicely. Roast chicken with thyme and a mushroom reduction highlights the Pinot’s savoury herb layers, while slow-braised lamb shoulder brings out the wine’s deeper fruit and spice character. For a lighter option, grilled baby beet and goat’s cheese salad picks up the red fruit and herbal notes without overshadowing them.
- Drink before: Enjoy now through the next 4–6+ years with moderate ageing potential for added complexity.
