Chamonix Feldspar Pinot Noir 2023
High on the eastern slopes above the Franschhoek Valley lies Chamonix Wine Estate, one of the region’s most distinctive mountain vineyards. The vineyards are planted on steep, elevated terrain where cooler temperatures and decomposed granite and sandstone soils slow ripening and help preserve freshness in the fruit.
The Chamonix Feldspar Pinot Noir 2023 takes its name from the feldspar-rich soils found on the estate - mineral-rich decomposed granite that encourages finesse rather than power. Pinot Noir thrives in these cooler pockets of Franschhoek, producing wines with fragrant fruit, fine structure and natural acidity.
Winemaking is deliberate but restrained. Fruit is hand-harvested and carefully sorted, with a portion fermented as whole bunches to add aromatic lift and structure. Fermentation takes place in a combination of concrete fermenters and open oak vats before maturation in French oak barrels for over a year, allowing the wine to gain subtle complexity without overshadowing the purity of Pinot Noir.
Colour:
Bright ruby red with youthful clarity and a translucent rim typical of cool-climate Pinot Noir.
Nose:
Fragrant aromas of sour cherry, wild strawberry and red berries lead the bouquet, followed by subtle notes of violet, gentle spice and a touch of forest floor.
Palate:
Medium-bodied with a supple, silky texture. Red cherry and raspberry flavours sit at the centre, supported by fine tannins and lively acidity. A light savoury note and delicate spice add complexity without overwhelming the fruit.
Finish:
Elegant and lingering, with persistent red berry fruit and a faint earthy note that gradually fades.
- Food Pairing : The elegance and freshness of Chamonix Feldspar Pinot Noir 2023 make it a versatile partner at the table. It pairs beautifully with dishes where subtle richness meets gentle acidity. Try it with roast duck, mushroom risotto, or herb-roasted chicken, where the wine’s red fruit and savoury notes complement the depth of flavour without overwhelming the dish. It also works well with grilled salmon or tuna, as the wine’s bright acidity and fine tannins cut through the natural oiliness of the fish while echoing the dish’s delicate texture.
