Benguela Cove Estate Pinot Noir 2023 (Diners)
Benguela Cove Lagoon Wine Estate lies near Hermanus on the edge of the Bot River Lagoon in the Walker Bay wine region, one of South Africa’s most recognised cool-climate wine areas. The vineyards benefit from the influence of the cold Benguela Current and steady Atlantic sea breezes, which keep daytime temperatures moderate and encourage slow, even ripening. This maritime climate helps Pinot Noir retain its delicate aromatics, bright acidity and fine tannin structure.
The estate focuses on low-yield vineyards and careful vineyard management to produce wines that reflect their coastal terroir. Grapes for the Benguela Cove Estate Pinot Noir 2023 are hand-harvested and carefully sorted before fermentation. A short cold soak helps extract colour and fruit intensity, while gentle punch-downs during fermentation preserve the variety’s delicate structure. The wine then undergoes malolactic fermentation and matures in French oak barrels for around 10 months, allowing subtle complexity to develop without overwhelming the fruit.
Colour:
Bright ruby with a translucent core and youthful crimson edge.
Nose:
Lifted aromas of plum, mulberry and red cherry lead the bouquet, followed by violet, subtle chocolate notes and a cool herbal edge of fennel and dried oregano.
Palate:
Medium-bodied with a silky texture typical of cool-climate Pinot Noir. Juicy red and dark berry fruit sits at the centre, supported by fine tannins and lively acidity. Gentle spice and earthy undertones add depth while keeping the wine fresh and precise.
Finish:
Elegant and lingering, with red berry fruit fading into soft spice and a savoury, slightly earthy note.
- Food Pairing : The elegance and bright acidity of Benguela Cove Estate Pinot Noir 2023 make it particularly versatile at the table. Roast duck with a cherry glaze works beautifully, as the wine’s red fruit complements the richness of the meat. Mushroom risotto or aubergine lasagne highlights the wine’s earthy undertones and silky texture. For lighter options, try it with charcuterie or grilled salmon, where the wine’s freshness and delicate tannins enhance the dish without overwhelming it.
