De Trafford Petit Verdot 2014
De Trafford is a small family-owned winery situated high in the mountains above Stellenbosch on the upper slopes of the Helderberg. Founded in 1992 by architect David Trafford and artist Rita Trafford, the estate has built a reputation for producing thoughtful, cellar-worthy wines with minimal intervention and a strong sense of place. The focus has always been on careful vineyard selection, natural fermentation and patient maturation rather than overt extraction or heavy-handed winemaking.
The De Trafford Petit Verdot 2014 is a relatively uncommon single-varietal expression of Petit Verdot, a grape more traditionally used in Bordeaux blends for structure and colour. In Stellenbosch’s warmer conditions, however, Petit Verdot ripens more reliably and can produce wines with impressive depth, spice and longevity. The 2014 vintage was matured in French oak and bottled unfiltered, allowing the wine to retain both texture and character.
Colour:
Deep ruby red with a dense, mature core and slight garnet edge.
Nose:
Blackberry and dark plum aromas are layered with cracked black pepper, tobacco leaf, mint and warm cinnamon spice. Subtle earthy notes and cedar complexity emerge with time in the glass.
Palate:
Structured yet increasingly approachable with age. Dense dark fruit is balanced by bright acidity and firm, dusty tannins that have softened into a more integrated texture over time. Savoury spice, dried herbs and graphite notes add complexity while maintaining freshness and energy.
Finish:
Long and dry, with lingering blackberry, tobacco and pepper spice carrying through the finish.
- Food Pairing : The De Trafford Petit Verdot 2014 pairs especially well with richly flavoured dishes that can stand up to its firm structure and savoury depth. Slow-roasted lamb shoulder, grilled ribeye or venison work particularly well, as the wine’s tannins soften alongside protein-rich dishes. The peppery spice and earthy notes also complement mushroom risotto, smoky braai flavours and aged hard cheeses. With some bottle age already developed, the wine now shows enough refinement to pair comfortably with slower-cooked winter dishes and more savoury restaurant-style preparations.
