Deetlefs Wine Estate is one of South Africa’s oldest family-owned wineries, based in Rawsonville in the Breedekloof Valley. The region is framed by dramatic mountain ranges and benefits from warm days, cooling evening air and reliable river-fed agriculture, conditions that help red grapes achieve ripe flavour while retaining freshness. This balance often produces generous yet structured wines with clear fruit definition.
The Deetlefs Estate Range is positioned as food-friendly wines made to be enjoyed around the table, and Deetlefs Merlot 2024 reflects that philosophy well. Rather than a simple single-varietal style, the wine is complemented by small portions of Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz, adding extra backbone, spice and complexity. Maturation for 15 months in seasoned French and Hungarian oak helps polish the texture while allowing the fruit to remain central.
Colour:
Intense deep ruby with a bright scarlet rim.
Nose:
Black cherry, plum, blackcurrant and raspberry lead the aromatics, followed by hints of spice and dried herbs.
Palate:
Smooth on entry with a medium- to full-bodied feel. Ripe dark fruit sits at the core, while the Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz components bring structure and savoury lift. Tannins are rounded and well-managed, with oak supporting rather than dominating the fruit.
Finish:
Persistent and gently savoury, finishing on dried mulberry, subtle herbs and soft spice.

Pair it with fillet steak, braised lamb shanks or slow-cooked oxtail, where the wine’s ripe fruit and gentle tannins complement rich meat textures beautifully. It also works well with beef burgers, roast chicken or mushroom dishes, as the savoury herbal finish adds depth while the freshness keeps each bite balanced. The producer also recommends classic richer dishes such as pot roast.
