Doolhof Bloedklip Malbec 2022
Malbec
Description
Doolhof Wine Estate lies at the foot of the dramatic Limietberg Mountains near Wellington, where steep slopes, varied soils and mountain breezes shape the character of the vineyards. The estate sits in a valley where warm days help ripen red varieties fully, while cooler evening air flowing down from the mountains preserves freshness in the grapes.
The Bloedklip Malbec forms part of Doolhof’s Limietberg Exclusive range and is sourced from a single vineyard planted on Hutton, Glenrosa and Clovelly soils, with vines around two decades old. These well-drained soils encourage concentrated berries and naturally low yields.
Only a small selection of barrels is used for this wine - a three-barrel selection matured in 300-litre French oak barrels. The wine spends extended time ageing in oak before blending, allowing the tannins and fruit to integrate slowly while maintaining the distinctive depth Malbec can achieve in Wellington.
Colour:
Deep ruby with a dense, almost opaque core and purple flashes at the rim.
Nose:
Rich aromas of dark plum and blackberry lead the bouquet, followed by subtle hints of black truffle, earth and savoury spice. The profile leans slightly Old World in style, with fruit layered alongside more savoury complexity.
Palate:
Full-bodied with concentrated dark fruit and a textured mouthfeel. Ripe plum and black cherry sit at the centre, supported by rounded tannins and balanced acidity. The oak influence adds depth and a touch of warm spice without overwhelming the fruit.
Finish:
Long and structured, finishing with lingering dark fruit, savoury notes and a gentle grip of tannins.

Doolhof Bloedklip Malbec 2022
- Food Pairing : The depth and savoury character of Doolhof Bloedklip Malbec 2022 make it well suited to robust, flavourful dishes. It pairs particularly well with grilled lamb chops or a slow-roasted leg of lamb, where the wine’s ripe fruit and structured tannins complement the richness of the meat. A classic South African braai with beef short ribs or rump steak also works beautifully, as the wine’s bold fruit stands up to smoky charred flavours. For something slightly different, try it with slow-cooked beef brisket or mushroom-based dishes such as roasted portobello mushrooms, where the wine’s earthy undertones echo the savoury flavours of the food.
