Mont Rochelle Cabernet Sauvignon 2023
Mont Rochelle Mountain Vineyards is situated in the Franschhoek Valley, surrounded by the mountains that help define this celebrated Cape wine region. The area's varied elevations and Mediterranean climate create conditions for growing Cabernet Sauvignon with concentrated fruit, freshness and structure. Cabernet Sauvignon has a long-standing place at Mont Rochelle, where the focus is on producing wines that combine ripe fruit with finesse and elegance. Winemaker Michael Langenhoven hand-harvested the grapes for the 2023 vintage on 13 March. The wine matured for 18 months in French oak barrels, with 20% new oak, adding subtle spice, structure and complexity while allowing the character of the grape to remain central. The result is a classic Franschhoek Cabernet Sauvignon with the depth to reward careful cellaring.
Colour: Ruby red with youthful purple hues, showing a deep, vibrant appearance in the glass.
Nose: A classic Cabernet Sauvignon nose of blackcurrant and cassis, layered with dark berry fruit, eucalyptus and hints of cigar box and freshly sharpened pencil. These savoury nuances add complexity without overpowering the fruit.
Palate: Full-bodied, with concentrated blackcurrant and dark berry flavours supported by fresh acidity and well-defined, silky tannins. Subtle oak spice and herbal notes add depth, while the structure gives the wine a polished, elegant feel rather than excessive weight.
Finish: Long and structured, with lingering cassis, dark fruit and gentle savoury notes of eucalyptus and oak.
- Food Pairing : Mont Rochelle Cabernet Sauvignon 2023 pairs beautifully with grilled beef steak, slow-roasted leg of lamb, beef short ribs or a hearty beef and mushroom pie. Its concentrated blackcurrant fruit complements the savoury flavours of roasted and grilled meat, while the firm yet silky tannins work particularly well with protein-rich dishes. For a meat-free option, try it with a rich mushroom and lentil bake, where the earthy flavours complement the wine's subtle herbal and oak notes.
