Leeu Passant, part of the Mullineux & Leeu Family Wines portfolio, is based in Franschhoek but sources fruit from exceptional vineyard sites across the Cape. The Stellenbosch Cabernet Sauvignon comes from a Helderberg site at around 300 metres above sea level, where iron-rich and granitic soils contribute structure, minerality and tension to the wine.
The philosophy is rooted in careful vineyard selection and minimal intervention, with indigenous fermentation and thoughtful oak maturation used to shape rather than dominate the wine. Ageing typically takes place in a combination of French oak barrels and larger format oak, allowing for slow development of texture and refinement. The result is a Cabernet Sauvignon that leans towards elegance and restraint, rather than overt power, reflecting a more classical interpretation of Stellenbosch terroir.
Colour:
Deep ruby with a dense, youthful core.
Nose:
Aromatic layers of blackcurrant, blackberry and dark cherry, supported by subtle herbal notes, dried thyme and a touch of floral lift. Hints of cedar and graphite add complexity.
Palate:
Medium- to full-bodied with fine, powdery tannins and fresh acidity. The fruit profile leans towards black and red berries, with plum and cassis supported by a savoury, mineral edge. Oak is well integrated, contributing structure without overshadowing the fruit. The style is poised and refined rather than heavy.
Finish:
Long and composed, with lingering dark fruit, gentle spice and a dry, mineral persistence.
