Le Riche Cabernet Sauvignon 2023
Cabernet Sauvignon
Description
Le Riche Wines is widely regarded as one of South Africa’s most dedicated Cabernet Sauvignon specialists. The family estate was founded in 1996 by Etienne Le Riche, often referred to as the “King of Cabernet”, and today the wines are crafted by his son Christo Le Riche.
Based in Stellenbosch, the winery works with carefully selected vineyard sites across the region, particularly around the Helderberg and Simonsberg areas. These slopes benefit from cooling maritime influences from False Bay and well-drained decomposed granite soils, conditions that consistently produce structured, age-worthy Cabernet Sauvignon.
Fruit for the Le Riche Cabernet Sauvignon 2023 is sourced from several vineyard blocks and vinified separately to preserve site character. After fermentation, the wine spends around 22 months maturing in French oak barrels, a portion of which are new. The winemaking philosophy remains focused and classical - allowing the purity, structure and depth of Stellenbosch Cabernet Sauvignon to define the wine.
Colour:
Deep garnet with a youthful crimson edge, showing the concentration typical of Stellenbosch Cabernet Sauvignon.
Nose:
Aromas of blackberry, cassis and black cherry lead the nose, followed by subtle notes of plum, rose petal and a touch of spearmint. With time in the glass, hints of cedar, pencil shavings and gentle spice begin to emerge.
Palate:
Medium- to full-bodied with layered dark fruit flavours of cassis, plum and black cherry. The tannins are firm but polished, providing structure without heaviness. Balanced acidity keeps the wine fresh while savoury notes of cedar and spice add depth.
Finish:
Long and gently savoury, with lingering black fruit and a refined cedar note that reinforces the wine’s classical Cabernet character.

Le Riche Cabernet Sauvignon 2023
- Food Pairing : The structure and tannin profile of Le Riche Cabernet Sauvignon 2023 make it a natural partner for richer savoury dishes. Grilled ribeye or a pepper-crusted steak works particularly well, as the wine’s tannins soften against the protein while cassis and cedar notes complement the charred flavours from the grill. Roast leg of lamb with rosemary is another excellent match, the herbal notes in the wine echoing the seasoning. Slow-cooked beef stew or braised short ribs highlight the wine’s savoury depth, while mature hard cheeses such as aged Cheddar or Karoo boerenkaas provide a satisfying contrast between saltiness and dark fruit richness.
