Hartenberg Cabernet Sauvignon 2022
Hartenberg Wine Estate is situated in the Bottelary Hills of Stellenbosch, a renowned South African wine region where warm growing seasons and varied soils help Cabernet Sauvignon develop ripe fruit, structure and depth. The estate has a long-standing reputation for producing expressive red wines, with a winemaking approach that values varietal character, careful vineyard selection and the benefits of measured oak maturation. Hartenberg Cabernet Sauvignon 2022 is made entirely from Cabernet Sauvignon and matured for 18 months in French oak barrels, using a combination of new and older oak. This approach adds subtle vanilla and savoury complexity while allowing the fruit and natural structure of the variety to remain central. The result is a polished Stellenbosch red with ripe fruit, integrated tannins and the structure to develop further in the bottle.
Colour: Deep ruby red with youthful garnet hints, showing good colour and concentration in the glass.
Nose: Fresh, ripe red fruit leads, with aromas of red cherries and blackcurrants complemented by vanilla and sweet tobacco. As the wine opens, subtle pencil-shaving and cedar-like notes add a savoury dimension, reflecting the Cabernet Sauvignon character and time spent in French oak.
Palate: Medium-full to full-bodied, with generous red and dark fruit flavours supported by gentle oak spice and a hint of graphite. The tannins are velvety and well integrated, giving the wine structure without making it feel overly firm. Fresh acidity adds definition, keeping the fruit lively and the overall profile composed.
Finish: Long and lingering, with ripe fruit gradually giving way to savoury tobacco, subtle spice and a delicate pencil-shaving note.
- Food Pairing : Hartenberg Cabernet Sauvignon 2022 is an excellent partner for grilled rib-eye steak, lamb chops or springbok fillet, as its firm structure complements rich meat while its ripe fruit and savoury notes work beautifully with chargrilled flavours. Slow-cooked beef stew or a rich beef lasagne also suits the wine, with the acidity helping to balance the richness of the sauce. For a vegetarian pairing, try a black mushroom stroganoff or roasted portobello mushrooms with thyme, which complement the wine’s earthy notes and subtle oak spice. Serve at around 16–18°C to allow the fruit, texture and complexity to show at their best.
