Ernst Gouws & Co Family Reserve Cab. Sauv. 2020
Cabernet Sauvignon
Description
Ernst Gouws & Co is a family-run Stellenbosch producer with a long-standing focus on classic, site-driven wines that reflect both vineyard character and careful cellar work. The vineyards for the Family Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2020 are rooted in decomposed granite soils on Stellenbosch slopes where warm days and cooling maritime influences help Cabernet Sauvignon ripen fully while retaining freshness and structure.
The Family Reserve range represents the estate’s more focused, limited-production wines, with an emphasis on concentration, balance and age-worthiness rather than overt extraction. Fruit is harvested by hand and matured in French oak to build texture and complexity while allowing the varietal character to remain clearly defined. The resulting style is recognisably Stellenbosch Cabernet - structured, savoury and composed.
Colour:
Deep ruby red with a dense core and youthful crimson edge.
Nose:
Blackcurrant, dark plum and blackberry form the core of the aromatics, followed by cedar, tobacco leaf and hints of graphite. Subtle notes of dried herbs, cocoa and spice emerge with time in the glass.
Palate:
Full-bodied and structured, the palate delivers ripe dark fruit framed by firm but polished tannins. The fruit profile leans towards cassis and black cherry, supported by savoury oak spice and a touch of dark chocolate. Fresh acidity keeps the wine focused, while the tannin structure gives it shape without feeling aggressive.
Finish:
Long and dry, with lingering notes of black fruit, cedar and earthy spice.

- Food Pairing : The structure and savoury depth of the Ernst Gouws & Co Family Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2020 make it well suited to hearty dishes such as flame-grilled ribeye, Karoo lamb chops or slow-braised beef short rib. Its tannins and dark fruit also pair comfortably with rich mushroom dishes or mature hard cheeses, where the wine’s freshness helps cut through richness while the oak spice complements smoky, roasted flavours.
