Ernie Els Major Series Cabernet Sauvignon 2023
Cabernet Sauvignon
Description
Ernie Els Wines is a South African estate rooted in the Helderberg foothills of Stellenbosch, where cool Atlantic breezes temper warm days to slow ripening and preserve natural acidity. Winemaker Louis Strydom pursues site-specific expressions that balance purity of fruit with thoughtful oak handling. The Major Series Cabernet Sauvignon 2023 comes from hand-picked, clonal parcels fermented separately and matured in French oak - with a thoughtful portion spending time in terracotta amphorae - to build both structure and nuance. This Cabernet reflects Ernie Els Wines’ blend of classic vineyard discipline and modern winemaking, yielding a wine that’s detailed, poised and expressive of its terroir.
Colour:
Deep ruby-plum with youthful vibrancy.
Nose:
A refined bouquet of cassis leaf, black plum and cherry is lifted with flint and fire-kissed mineral notes, entwined with cedar and creamy vanilla pod from oak influence.
Palate:
Medium- to medium-full-bodied with succulent red and black fruit - ripe cherry, plum and redcurrant - framed by lively acidity and fine, lemony-fresh tannins. Subtle savoury spice and mineral tension add depth without overshadowing the core fruit.
Finish:
The finish is poised and lingering, with fruit brightness and cedar spice lingering alongside gentle tannic structure that invites further exploration.

Ernie Els Major Series Cabernet Sauvignon 2023
- Food Pairing : Ernie Els Major Series Cabernet Sauvignon 2023 pairs naturally with deeply flavoured, savoury cuisine where structure and fruit can stand up to richer dishes. A char-grilled ribeye or beef short ribs with rosemary and cracked pepper echo the wine’s cassis and cedar notes, while slow-braised lamb shank or oxtail potjie with herbs bring out its savoury depth and spice. For a flavour contrast, a tomato-rich beef ragu or mature hard cheeses (like aged cheddar or Manchego) highlight the wine’s balance of fruit intensity and refined tannins - making this Cabernet a welcome partner from cosy dinners to celebratory feasts.
