Benguela Cove Estate Cab Sauvignon 21 (Diners)
Cabernet Sauvignon
Description
Benguela Cove Lagoon Wine Estate is located near Hermanus on the edge of the Bot River Lagoon in the Walker Bay wine region. The vineyards are strongly influenced by the nearby Atlantic Ocean, where cool maritime winds moderate temperatures and extend the ripening season. This slower ripening helps Cabernet Sauvignon retain freshness and aromatic precision while building structure and depth.
Â
The estateâs vineyards are planted on a mix of shale and clay-rich soils that support balanced vine growth and concentrated fruit development. Careful vineyard management and selective harvesting ensure that only the best parcels contribute to the final wine.
Â
For the Benguela Cove Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2021, the grapes were fermented with careful extraction to preserve fruit purity and structure. The wine was then matured in French oak barrels, allowing the tannins to soften while adding subtle layers of spice and cedar to the Cabernetâs classic dark fruit profile.
Â
Colour:
Deep ruby with a dense core and youthful purple edge.
Â
Nose:
Aromatic notes of blackcurrant and dark plum lead, followed by hints of violet, cedar and tobacco leaf. Subtle oak-derived notes of vanilla and baking spice add complexity.
Â

Medium- to full-bodied with a firm but polished structure. The palate shows concentrated cassis and blackberry fruit supported by fine-grained tannins and balanced acidity. Gentle flavours of dark chocolate, cedar and dried herbs develop as the wine opens.
Â

Long and structured with lingering blackcurrant, spice and a savoury herbal note.

- Food Pairing : The firm structure and dark fruit profile of Benguela Cove Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2021 make it an excellent match for robust dishes. Grilled ribeye steak or a classic South African braai pairs naturally with the wineâs tannins and cassis flavours. Slow-roasted lamb with rosemary works equally well, echoing Cabernetâs herbal notes. For a comforting pairing, try it with a rich beef stew or mushroom-based dishes such as wild mushroom risotto, where the savoury flavours complement the wineâs depth and oak spice. Mature cheeses like aged cheddar or Gouda also bring out the wineâs subtle cedar and chocolate notes.
