Annandale Cabernet Sauvignon 2020
Cabernet Sauvignon
Description
Annandale Wines is one of the oldest farms in the Helderberg Valley, with roots dating back to 1688. Set on the western slopes of the Helderberg mountain in Stellenbosch, the estate benefits from cooling maritime influence and decomposed granite soils that help Cabernet Sauvignon ripen slowly and evenly while retaining freshness and structure.
Today, Annandale follows a restrained, low-intervention philosophy in both vineyard and cellar. Grapes are hand-harvested from trellised vineyards, with fermentation and maturation handled carefully to preserve site expression rather than overt winemaking character. The Annandale Cabernet Sauvignon 2020 was matured in a combination of first-, second- and third-fill French oak barrels, giving the wine depth and savoury complexity without overwhelming the fruit.
The result is a Stellenbosch Cabernet that leans into classic structure and longevity while still showing the generous fruit profile associated with modern South African winemaking.
Colour:
Deep ruby with a dark garnet edge, showing good concentration in the glass.
Nose:
Blackcurrant, ripe plum and blackberry lead the aromatics, followed by notes of tobacco leaf, cedar, mocha and subtle clove spice. As the wine opens, savoury hints of smokiness and dried herbs emerge.
Palate:
Full-bodied yet composed, with dense dark berry fruit supported by fine-grained tannins and balanced acidity. The oak sits comfortably in the background, adding texture and notes of cocoa and spice rather than sweetness. There is a distinctly Helderberg character here - ripe fruit with an earthy, slightly savoury edge.
Finish:
Long and gently drying, with lingering cassis, mocha and subtle tobacco notes carrying through the finish.

- Food Pairing : The structure and savoury depth of the Annandale Cabernet Sauvignon 2020 make it especially well suited to richer dishes with char, spice or slow-cooked elements. It pairs naturally with grilled ribeye, Karoo lamb chops or slow-braised beef short rib, where the tannins help cut through richness while the dark fruit complements smoky flavours. For something more relaxed, it also works beautifully with mature cheddar, camembert or mushroom-based dishes, where the wine’s earthy undertones and oak spice find common ground with umami flavours.
