Rainbows End Cabernet Franc 2024
Rainbow's End is a small, family-run wine estate in the Banghoek Valley of Stellenbosch, owned and farmed by the Malan family. The vineyards climb to around 540 metres above sea level, backed by the Jonkershoek Mountain and overlooking the Banghoek basin. This elevated, mountainous setting brings cooler conditions and helps preserve freshness in the grapes, while the estate's distinctive soils contribute concentration and mineral character. The estate's Cabernet Franc comes from two neighbouring high-altitude blocks planted in 2001, at approximately 500 metres above sea level. The vineyards include French Clone 214 and South African Clone 1, with the cooler 2024 ripening season allowing the grapes to retain freshness while developing ripe, expressive fruit. The grapes are hand-picked, carefully sorted and fermented in open fermenters, followed by extended time on the skins. The wine is then matured for 12 months in 100% French oak before being bottled without filtration. Winemaker Anton Malan takes a vintage-led approach at Rainbow's End rather than trying to fit the wines into a fixed Old World or New World style. His philosophy is to adapt the winemaking to what each season and vineyard block naturally provides, with consistency focused on quality rather than a predetermined style.
Colour: Deep purple-red with a youthful, concentrated appearance.
Nose: Black cherry and cassis lead the aromatics, with earthy notes of wet soil and hints of bell pepper, sage, thyme and cinnamon. As the wine opens, a subtle graphite character emerges, adding freshness and depth.
Palate: Medium to full-bodied, with fresh, concentrated dark fruit supported by lively acidity and fine-grained tannins. Black cherry and cassis sit alongside savoury herbal and mineral notes, giving the wine both richness and freshness. The tannins provide a firm but polished structure, while the French oak adds subtle spice rather than dominating the fruit.
Finish: Long and savoury, with lingering dark fruit, graphite, fresh herbs and fine tannins.
- Food Pairing : The combination of ripe dark fruit, fresh acidity and fine tannins makes Rainbow's End Cabernet Franc 2024 particularly well suited to grilled lamb chops, roast lamb, venison, beef fillet and hearty mushroom dishes. Its savoury herbal and graphite character also works beautifully with herb-crusted meats and roasted root vegetables, while the wine's freshness keeps richer dishes from feeling too heavy.
- Drink before: Cellaring potential: Enjoy now, but with the structure to develop beautifully over the next 5–8 years.
