Landskroon PDV Cabernet Franc 2022
On the south-western slopes of Paarl Mountain, Landskroon has been part of the Cape’s wine story for generations. The estate’s winemaking heritage stretches back more than 150 years, with five generations of the De Villiers family contributing to its development. Paarl’s warm climate and mountain-influenced vineyards provide a particularly suitable home for Cabernet Franc, allowing the variety to develop ripe fruit while retaining the savoury, earthy character that makes it distinctive. Cabernet Franc has an especially important place in the Landskroon story. The estate harvested its first Cabernet Franc in 1979, making Landskroon an early South African producer of the variety. It was initially bottled as a single-variety wine before Cabernet Franc later found a home in the estate’s blends. Its return as a dedicated wine reflects both the grape’s renewed popularity and Landskroon’s long-standing connection with it. The Landskroon PDV Cabernet Franc 2022 is a dry, 100% Cabernet Franc made from carefully selected grapes. Landskroon describes the wine as having a bright ruby colour, earthy aromas and ripe mulberry and blackcurrant, with a broad array of flavours across the palate. The wine is also part of the Paul & Hugo de Villiers range, connecting it to the De Villiers family heritage at Landskroon. In 2025, Van Loveren Family Vineyards acquired the Landskroon wine brand and operational cellar, bringing the historic Paarl estate into a new chapter while retaining the Landskroon identity and legacy.
Colour: Bright ruby red with a youthful, vibrant appearance.
Nose: Ripe mulberry and blackcurrant lead, accompanied by earthy notes and subtle savoury spice. There is an attractive freshness to the fruit, with Cabernet Franc’s characteristic herbal complexity adding another layer without dominating the aromas.
Palate: Medium to full-bodied, with ripe dark and red berry fruit supported by fresh acidity and fine, structured tannins. Mulberry and blackcurrant remain prominent, while earthy and gently savoury flavours add depth. The palate has enough weight for red meat but retains the freshness and lift that make Cabernet Franc particularly food-friendly.
Finish: Long and savoury, with dark berry fruit, earthy notes and fine tannins leaving a clean, persistent impression.
- Food Pairing : The Landskroon PDV Cabernet Franc 2022 is particularly well suited to dishes where savoury flavours and moderate richness allow its dark fruit and fresh structure to shine. Try it with grilled or braaied lamb chops, roast beef, venison, beef fillet or a mushroom and herb pasta. The wine’s fine tannins work naturally with protein, while its freshness cuts through richer dishes and its earthy, savoury character complements grilled, roasted and herb-driven flavours. A platter of charcuterie and mature cheeses is another particularly good match.
