Waterford Antigo 2021
Bordeaux Blend
Description
Waterford Estate, set on the Helderberg slopes of Stellenbosch, is known for its focus on terroir expression and classical structure. The Antigo range is inspired by traditional Italian varieties, with Sangiovese planted in carefully selected soils that mimic the gravelly, well-drained conditions found in Tuscany.
The estate’s philosophy centres on minimal intervention and site-driven winemaking. Grapes are hand-harvested, and maturation in oak is handled with restraint to preserve varietal character. With Antigo, the goal is not to replicate Italy, but to interpret Sangiovese through a Stellenbosch lens - balancing bright acidity, savoury detail, and refined structure.
Colour:
Bright ruby red with a translucent edge, true to the varietal’s lighter colour profile.
Nose:
Red cherry and cranberry lead, followed by dried herbs, tomato leaf, and a subtle earthy note. Hints of spice and oak sit quietly in the background.
Palate:
Medium-bodied with vibrant acidity and fine, structured tannins. The fruit profile is red-driven - sour cherry and red plum - supported by a savoury, slightly rustic edge. The wine feels focused and linear rather than rich, with good tension throughout.
Finish:
Dry and persistent, with lingering red fruit, herbal notes, and a gentle grip.

Waterford Antigo 2021
- Food Pairing : Waterford Antigo 2021 is a natural partner for tomato-based and herb-driven dishes. It works particularly well with slow-cooked lamb ragù or a classic beef lasagne, where the wine’s acidity cuts through richness while complementing the savoury flavours. It’s equally at home with wood-fired pizza, especially with cured meats or mushrooms, and pairs well with grilled aubergine or Mediterranean-style vegetable dishes. The bright acidity and moderate structure make it a versatile option for food-focused occasions.
