Founded in 1685, Groot Constantia is widely recognised as the birthplace of the South African wine industry. Situated in the Constantia Valley on the southern slopes of Table Mountain, the estate benefits from a maritime climate strongly influenced by cool breezes from the nearby Atlantic Ocean. These cooling influences slow ripening and help retain freshness and aromatic detail in the grapes.
The Gouverneurs Reserve Red represents the estate’s flagship Bordeaux-style blend, made from carefully selected vineyard parcels planted on granite-based clay soils across different aspects of the estate. Each varietal contributes a distinct component: Cabernet Sauvignon provides structure, Merlot adds richness, Cabernet Franc brings aromatic lift, and Petit Verdot contributes colour and depth.
Grapes for the 2021 vintage were hand-harvested and fermented in stainless steel with regular pump-overs for extraction. The wine spent around 15 months in French oak barrels (predominantly new oak) before blending and bottling, allowing the components to integrate while building complexity and structure.
Colour:
Deep ruby with a dense, dark core and a garnet edge, reflecting both concentration and youthful structure.
Nose:
Ripe aromas of plum, black cherry and blackberry lead the bouquet, followed by notes of dark chocolate, cedar and tobacco leaf. Subtle hints of spice and graphite add further complexity.
Palate:
Full-bodied and structured, with layers of dark berry fruit supported by firm yet polished tannins. Fresh acidity from the cool Constantia climate keeps the wine focused, while well-integrated oak contributes gentle spice and depth.
Finish:
Long and structured, finishing with black fruit, cedar and a savoury edge that lingers on the palate.
